Importance of Floor Preparation

Proper floor preparation is the foundation of a successful flooring installation. Before any coating, epoxy, or overlay is applied, the substrate must be clean, level, and free from contaminants. Without thorough preparation, the flooring materials may not bond correctly, leading to premature failures, cracks, or peeling. Effective floor preparation ensures a longer-lasting, more durable surface that stands up to daily wear and tear, making it essential for both commercial and industrial projects.

Moreover, floor preparation also addresses underlying surface imperfections that could impact the performance and aesthetics of the new flooring. By leveling the substrate and creating the proper surface profile, floor preparation enhances the durability of the installation, helping it stand up to heavy traffic, machinery, chemicals, and other demanding conditions.

Methods of Floor Preparation

  • Diamond Grinding: A mechanical process using diamond-tipped grinding discs to remove surface imperfections, coatings, or thin layers of concrete. It produces a smooth, polished surface and can be used for surface preparation or decorative finishing.
  • Shotblasting: A high-impact method that propels small steel balls at high velocity onto the floor surface to remove coatings, contaminants, and weak concrete. It creates a textured profile ideal for coating adhesion and is effective for large areas.
  • Scarifying: A aggressive surface preparation technique using a machine with rotating cutters or flails to remove thick coatings, adhesives, or damaged concrete. It creates a rough, textured surface suitable for new overlay applications or coatings.
  • Floor Leveling/Ardet/Screed: The process of applying a self-leveling compound or cementitious material to create a flat, even surface on uneven or damaged concrete floors. This technique is used to correct irregularities and prepare the floor for final flooring installations or coatings.

Surface Preparation for Different Flooring Types

Each flooring type requires specific preparation methods to ensure optimal performance.

Epoxy Flooring

Requires a clean, roughened surface for proper adhesion. Grinding or shot blasting is typically used to create a solid bond between the concrete and epoxy.

Polished Concrete

Must be ground down to remove imperfections, followed by a series of finer grinds to achieve a smooth, polished finish.

Vinyl Flooring

The surface must be level, smooth, and free of debris to prevent visible imperfections through the vinyl sheets or tiles.

Carpet Tiles

Requires a clean, level surface, with attention paid to moisture levels to prevent mold growth under the tiles.

Floor Preperation Process

We utilise advanced equipment like diamond grinders, shot blasters, and scarifiers to ensure precise and efficient surface preparation, to achieve your required Concreate Surface Profile(CSP)

Diamond Grinders

01

Used to remove old coatings and smooth out the concrete surface.

Shot
Blasters

02

Utilised for large areas where fast, effective surface roughening is required.

Scarifiers

03

Ideal for removing tough coatings, high spots, and thick layers of concrete or adhesives.

Vacuum Systems

04

Work alongside other equipment to minimise dust and debris, ensuring a cleaner, safer work environment.

Floor Leveling

05

Even surface on a floor to ensure it is smooth and level before installing flooring materials.
